The landscape of PG seats is often discussed during medical admission planning, but it must be understood in the correct context. In every state, a ratio is maintained between UG (MBBS) seats and PG (MD/MS) seats as per regulatory guidelines set by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
In newly established medical colleges, especially during the initial years after UG permission, PG clinical seats may not be available. Typically, for the first few years, these colleges may only receive non-clinical PG branches. This is done to maintain the overall UG–PG seat ratio mandated by regulatory authorities.
Students should not base their MBBS admission decisions solely on the number of PG seats available in a state. PG seat availability should be considered only as a supportive factor, not the primary admission planning parameter. Core factors like college quality, MBBS seat availability, fee structure and counselling strategy should take priority.
UG-PG Ratio
NMC mandates a specific ratio between UG MBBS seats and PG MD/MS seats in every college. This ratio governs how many PG seats a college can have.
New Colleges
